WHAT IS PUF?
PUF (Physical Unclonable Function) is a physical property that is based on random variations in the molecular structure of a chip. These variations are created during the manufacturing process. A unique binary code is generated for each chip based on these variations and that code becomes the Root of Trust — unclonable, tamper-proof and secure. While the theory is sound, commercialization has been difficult.
CURRENT PUF SOLUTIONS
TOO VOLATILE
Most PUF-secured chips suffer from volatility. Even everyday fluctuations in temperature and humidity can impact the physical properties of chips to a degree that makes the binary code of the chip unstable. That is problematic because the private key is derived from this binary code.
TOO EXPENSIVE
To stabalise these chips each one requires an ‘Error Correction Code’ that is programed into each chip before it leaves the manufacturing plant. This extra step increases the cost of chips to a level that is not commercially viable.
